About the seminar

The PMI South Alabama Chapter will hold their 2018 Professional Development Seminar on October 18th. Our speakers this year will be discussing many aspects of project management. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or just starting in your project management career, you will learn a great deal from these great speakers.

Mr. Latham’s Presentation Title:

Tool Time: How to Stand Out From Other PMs Through the Effective Use of PM Tools.

This presentation will focus on effectively using key PM tools and templates and how to tailor them to meet both project and organizational challenges. The session will demonstrate different approaches for “right sizing” tools and leveraging these skills into mapping a path to organizational success beyond simple project management. Included will be some neat tricks and tips in MS Project and other applications which will help any PM stand out above their peers. The presentation will help any PM practitioner move beyond project management to leveraging PM tools into organizational and business problem solving. The presentation will offer a time for sharing ideas and successful experiences and problem solving ideas from participants.

Charles “Chuck” Latham is currently a Project/Program Management Consultant with expertise in developing and maturing Project Management Office (PMO) operations from the ground up. He has developed PM methodologies, governance processes and best practices for myriad organizations. His outstanding success has benefitted such clients and organizations as Alfa Insurance, HP, IBM, PricewaterhouseCoopers, large conversion projects with Wells Fargo, Massachusetts and Alabama State Medicaid, US Department of Education, US Army, Texas and Alabama State DMVs, New Mexico State University, US Department of Veteran Affairs, etc. He is skilled in metric development and strategic design helping organizations rebuild culture, boost quality, and delivering programs and templates with durable and scalable value. He has held roles from Director of PMO and IT, to VP and University Academic Dean. Chuck is a retired Air Force Officer, published author, and volunteers his time each week in prison ministries. Chuck has been a PMP for almost two decades and is a Certified Scrum Master, certified Process Consultant through IBM and holds a BS in Business Management from St. John Fisher College, MBA from Chapman University, and Master’s Certificate from the George Washington University.

Kanban in Practice

The introduction, evolution, and execution of Kanban practices for managing workflow, throughput, and resource planning in a technology environment

Randy Johns, PMP has worked in technology and operations for 20 years. He has merged his passion for the mining and building materials industry with his passion for technology. This merger has led him down a path of front-line operational support, technical support, project management, and applications management. Randy’s presentation will describe the use of the Kanban methodology. Kanban is a simple and visual way to manage projects to workflow. Randy will demonstrate how Kanban came into effect in Drummond MIS and how it has been used to better manage throughput as well as resource planning.

Mr. Smith’s Presentation Title:

An Agile Overview for People Who Don't Really Like Agile

The Agile methodology has taken some industries, especially software development, by storm. It inspires fierce loyalty from some - and equally fierce dislike from others. Gary Smith will help you take a look at Agile as a tailoring decision, not a litmus test or life philosophy, and will discuss situations that it's right for, and some where it isn't.

Gary Smith is the Chief Operating Officer for Jamersan, an Opelika web development company that is agile, or at least agile-ish, and President of Nectar Bridge, a consulting firm which helps business owners make plans and set priorities around sales, marketing, and operations. He's been the webmaster for PMI South Alabama and spoken at PMI's national conference. He lives in Prattville with his wife Diane and has sons attending Troy University and the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

 

Dr. Goodson’s Presentation Title:

Leading Difficult Conversations

Dr. Jane Goodson, Professional Development Trainer and Consultant, has over 30 years of consulting and training experience in both public and private sector organizations. Among other degrees, she holds a PhD in Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior from the College of Business at the University of Alabama. During her career at Auburn University at Montgomery, she was Director of the MBA program, head of the Department of Management, and dead of the College of Business, serving 12 years in that role before returning to the classroom and retiring as Professor Emeritus in 2014. Dr. Goodson specializes in the area of management consulting and has extensive experience in organizational change efforts.

 

Ms. Jernigan's Presentation Title:

Recruiting and Retaining the Next Generation of Project Managers – Characteristics and challenges of Millennials and Generation Z

Ashley Jernigan attended Alabama State University and graduated with a degree in Communications with a concentration in Public Relations. She was fortunate to start her career before graduating as the Assistant Private Events Director at a national private club corporation and held multiple positions before becoming one of the youngest Private Events Director in the company. While working full time, Ashley attended Georgia State University and received an MBA then moved on to direct all the marketing efforts for one of the largest restaurants and property management companies in the River Region.

Ashley has a passion for helping young professionals advance in their career because her own professional journey was not easy. She explains that journey and gives tips, tricks and tools to navigate and excel in corporate world onher blog www.top5careertips.com. Her motto: Network for net worth, volunteer to advance your career and know when it’s time to go!

After nearly a decade of service in the hospitality industry, Ashley decided to start her own Hospitality Consulting Business JDB Hospitality, LLC. JDB is a consulting firm specializing in event management, brand awareness,marketing and public relations.
